Coat of Arms what is it? This is one of the top questions we get in our shows. To explain what they are is simply a powerful family symbol that is passed down through generations from the original bearer. Coat of Arms were commonly used throughout the 11–17th centuries and are used as a meaningful reminder of family ancestors from the past, present, and into the future. Click here to go to our store!

The symbolism in the design of a family coat of arms or crest (as they are sometime called) can tell you about the original bearers’ achievements and status in society—a real testament to a family’s legacy.

Unfortunately, not every name was granted a coat of arms. Most commonly, only nobility or high-class families in medieval Europe had them because they were granted by kings to recognize achievements.

The symbols in a Coat of Arms are used to identify families or individuals. Much like we use a signature today. It is a detailed design that often includes a shield, crest, helmet, motto or country of origin, and supporters that is placed on either side of the shield. The image could be used as a whole, or the crest can be used as a simplified symbol used as a clan badge, etc.

Coats of arms can help you learn a lot about your ancestry. They were intended to recognize achievements and so the design can provide insight into your family’s legacy. They’re also passed down through generations and carry the history of the family with them.
